About the club

A lifelong Smithville native, Mary Ann has dedicated her career to helping others learn, grow, and discover their potential. Whether she’s in a classroom teaching English at DeKalb County High School, designing creative work for businesses across Tennessee, or leading dancers across a stage, her passion has always been helping people succeed.

Before becoming one of Middle Tennessee’s most respected old-time dance instructors, Mary Ann competed as an NCAA Division I basketball player at Duke University. She later earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Visual Communications from Belmont University, combining athletic discipline with artistic creativity—qualities that continue to define her teaching style today.

Professionally, Mary Ann has built nearly three decades of experience as a graphic designer and previously served as Art Director and Prepress Manager at Bradley Printing before becoming an educator. Her creativity, attention to detail, and ability to inspire others have made an impact in both the classroom and the business community.

As director of the Smithville Old-Time Dance Club, Mary Ann leads dancers of all ages—from young beginners taking their very first steps to accomplished competition teams representing DeKalb County across Tennessee. Under her leadership, dancers have earned honors at the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree, performed throughout the state, and even appeared on the historic Grand Ole Opry stage.

Above all, Mary Ann believes old-time dance is about more than ribbons and trophies. It’s about preserving Tennessee’s rich heritage, building lifelong friendships, developing confidence, and creating memories that families cherish for generations.

Her energy is contagious, her enthusiasm is genuine, and her love for people shines through every class she teaches. She has a unique gift for making everyone—from young children to adults trying dance for the first time—feel welcome on the dance floor.

Lillie Young brings enthusiasm, talent, and a genuine love for old-time dance to every class she teaches. As an accomplished competitive clogger and dedicated member of the Smithville Old-Time Dance Club, she enjoys helping dancers of all ages build confidence while having fun.

Lillie has been part of the club’s successful competition teams, including performances at the Grand Ole Opry following the team’s award-winning appearance at the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree. Those experiences have strengthened her appreciation for the traditions of old-time dance and the teamwork it takes to perform at a high level.

As an instructor, Lillie teaches clogging classes, assists with square dancing instruction, and enjoys working with the club’s youngest dancers. Her patient, encouraging style helps beginners feel comfortable while challenging more experienced dancers to continue improving. She also serves as an assistant instructor, stepping in for Mary Ann when needed and helping ensure every class is welcoming, organized, and full of energy.

Known for her positive attitude, infectious smile, and exceptional clogging skills, Lillie has become a favorite among students and parents alike. Whether she’s preparing a competition routine or helping someone learn their very first steps, she believes dancing should always be fun, encouraging, and something people look forward to each week.
